THE ENDANGERED ENVIRONMENT OF THE PEAT BLOG AND THE MONASTRY OF SAN PIETRO IN LAMOSA

This is one of the most important eco-system explored by Double Path. Wetlands, and marshes in particular, are among the most threatened habitats on the planet. This uniquehabitat dates back to prehistoric times and the human remains kept by the the peat blog date back to 9000 years ago.

Marshes, like the ones in this Reserve, perform multiple functions that are essential for the ecological balance of the entire territory. They control flooding, effectively purify the water by retaining both organic and chemical pollutants, block the spread of carbon dioxide — sometimes to a greater extent than forests — and regulate the microclimate. The lives of endangered bird species depend on the marshes, but if managed properly, they also offerother direct services to humans such as nature tourism, research and monitoring activities, or environmental education.

The second path will lead the visitors to the Monastry of San Pietro in Lamosa which datesback to 1100 and where the monk community life has been influenced by the surroundingeco-system. The Monastry Church shows beautiful frescos and the whole architecturalcomplex is immersed in the green and dominate the landscape of the blog peat.
